American Idol Instant Recap: La’Porsha Renae, “Diamonds”

Diamonds are forever.

Diamonds are forever.

What a way to finish the queen’s coronation.

When you’re the heavy underdog, you have one plan – don’t screw up. Don’t do anything that’s going to make the people who have been voting for you think they shouldn’t. Don’t do anything to make people who might have been on the fence think they shouldn’t. Don’t do something that’s going to get people to doubt you one bit.

Just get up there and sing.

I think La’Porsha was robbed of a moment, because the final song is supposed to be the potential first single and that’s provided a ton of great moments. Kelly Clarkson. Phillip Phillips. Even Nick Fradiani. But this season has been a disaster from the start so why would they do this right.

Was it her best performance of the season? No, I think “No More Drama” was better and the first time she sang Diamonds was so much better because there was a lot of emotion attached to it that gets lost after we’ve all heard the song before. But this performance didn’t have to be great. It just needed to be.

And it was.
