RIP Big Black, TV’s greatest sidekick

TMZChristopher ‘Big Black’ Boykin, who was the other half of Rob Dyrdek’s hit MTV show “Rob & Big” — has died … TMZ has learned. His rep tells us Chris died Tuesday morning. No word on cause of death yet. He was Rob’s best friend and bodyguard on their reality show, which ran from 2006 to 2008 — and also appeared on ‘Fantasy Factory.’ The pals got into a bunch of random adventures — like breaking Guinness World Records, exorcising their house, installing an ATM … and, of course, catching people with their net gun.

This wasn’t the news I wanted to hear to end my day.

When Rob & Big came out on MTV I was in my mid-20s and had ZERO responsibilities except try not to show up to work too hungover (FAIL). My buddy and myself lived and died by the show. He was the little dude, I was the big dude and we decided we were gonna hit the lottery, be hetero lifemates and do all sorts of random shit in the name of fun. Mini horse? Oh hell year we were gonna get one.

There was something about Big that was tremendously relateable for me. I wanted to be like him. I may or may not have dressed like him for Halloween in a culturally inappropriate way that looks bad now but seemed so right at the time (it was a tribute; plus I’m white AF in October and the costume wouldn’t have made sense. Halloween needs to be in July, BTW). I wanted to be Big Black because he had every trait a person should have – loyalty, kindness, hilarious, he was huge and could kick anyone’s ass and, oh yeah, probably had a monster hog.

Me and my buddy never became hetero lifemates. We became married dudes with two kids each and we rarely see each other. We became Rob & Big without knowing it. I’ll never forget the good years, the laughs, the emails about the show. And, of course, my FAVORITE cold open to any show in the history of TV.

PS Maybe now’s not the time, but has there ever been a discussion on the subtle racism involved in Rob & Big? Or was the show just too funny to bring up the fact a little rich white dude had a giant black bodyguard who lived in the same house as him and did pretty much whatever he said? Too soon?
